Fortin, M. J. (Flamsteed) (Celestial Atlas; 30 Plates; Zodiac): Atlas Celeste De Flamsteed, Approuve Par L'Academie Royale Des Sciences...Sous Le Privilege De Cette Compagnie. Seconde Edition.
Paris: Fr. G. Deschamps (rue S. Jacques), 1776 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall. Large 8vo.
The second edition of this decorative celestial atlas was issued the same year as the first. Original leather spine and marbled boards, hinges starting, banded spine present but not legible. Interior VG or better. All 30 b&w engraved (on laid paper) plates present, along with 2 copies of plate 10 ( don't see obvious differences except some verso notations on the copy of the second). All 40 pp. of original text present with original endpapers. Hand inscribed (contemporary) verse re: celetial bodies inside front cover. Flamsteeds original 26 plates were re-engraved here on a smaller scale (7x9 inches; 18x23cm). This particular edition expanded the number of plates to 30. Fortin was an artisan, not an astronomer, and was a globe maker for the French royal family. The artistic quality of Flamsteed's original images thereby was much improved. Charles Messier and Hohann Bode both based their star charts on Fortin's work. Flamsteed himself died in 1719, and his "Historia Coelestis Britannica" was published posthumously in 1725.

ここで「along with 2 copies of plate 10 ( don't see obvious differences except some verso notations on the copy of the second).」
とあったのはただの製本ミスかなと思って、この注をつけた人と同じく気にもとめなかったのです。しかし、あとで指摘してくれた方がいてよく見ると違ってました。片方には「ポニアトフスキーのおうし座」がないのです。
