Chaldean Shepherds, ranging trackless fields,
Beneath the concave of unclouded skies
Spread like a sea, in boundless solitude,
Looked on the polar star, as on a guide
And guardian of thier course, that never closed
His steadfast eye. The planetaly Five
With a submissive reverence their sleeping flock,
Those radiant Mercuries, that seemed to move
Carrying through ether, in perpetual round,
Decrees and resolutions of the Gods;
And by their aspects, signifing works
Of dim futurity, to Man revealed.
The imaginative faculty was lord
Of observations natural; and, thus
Led on, those shepherds made report of stars
In set rotation passing to and fro,
Between the orbs of our apparent sphere
And its invisible counterpart, around
With answering constellation, under earth,
Removed from all approach of living sight
But present to the dead; who, so they deemed,
Like those celestial messagers beheld
All accidents, and judges were of all.
(「THE POETICAL WORKS OF WORDSWORTH,G.M.HARPER,1933」
この記述はROBERT BROWNの「Reserchs into the origin of the PRIMITIVE CONSTELLATIONS of the Greeks, Phoenicians and Babylonian」(1899)の以下の分から引用されていると思われる。
We know that the stars were figuratively regarded by the Sumero-Akkadian as ' a hevenly flock', a simile which is even found as late as the so-call Chaldean Oracles.(ギリシャ語引用)(Oracle, No exlii). Of these 'herds' the seven planets were the Lubati ('Old sheep'), and whole of the star had certin stellar shepherd.

その中で、先に挙げたROBERT BROWNの「Reserchs into the origin of the PRIMITIVE CONSTELLATIONS of the Greeks, Phoenicians and Babylonian」(1899)に以下のコメントがあるので以下に引用しておく。

Writers have often told us, speaking merely from the depth of their ignorance, how 'Chaldean shepherds' were wont to gaze upon the brilliant noctural sky, and to imagine that such and such stars resembled this or that figure. But all this is merely the old effort to make capital out of nescience, and the stars are before our eyes to prove the contrary. Having already certain fixed ideas and figures in his mind, the constellation-framer, when he come to his task, applied his firures to the stars and the stars to his figures as harmoniously as possible. .......
